The Adirondacks include the only designated canoe wilderness area in the state of New York. There are numerous lake options throughout the towns near the Alpine Lodge, including Newcomb Lake, Schroon Lake, Blue Mountain, Long Lake, Raquette and Tupper Lake, Indian Lake, Lake George, Brant Lake, Minerva and many, many more. Most of these boating locations have their own fresh water beach, which is perfect for relaxing in the sun, cooking something on the grill, or getting a hook wet! Flat water kayaks are great for the numerous lakes and ponds!
If you’re looking for more of a white water experience, complete with raging rapids guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping, check out the Hudson River, which runs just behind the Alpine Lodge in North Creek NY. The Hudson River Gorge is lucky to have a dam let out which takes place every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in the morning. These are the days that the numerous rafting outfitters in the area offer their guided trips down the Hudson. North Creek Rafting Company and Square Eddy Expeditions are within walking distance to the Alpine Lodge.
If you’re idea of outdoor fun involved amazing mountain top views of the High Peaks, you’ll find an extensive number of great trails for all ability levels in the Gore Mountain Region. Whether you’re well on your way to becoming a 46er (someone who has hiked each of the 46 High Peaks) or just begining to lace up your hiking books, there is something for everyone. Our favorites are OK Slip Falls, the Schaefer Trail, Moxham Mountain (pictured below) or head up to Keene and Lake Placid to check out the awesome stone. You might even see a rock enthusiast hanging cliff side!
The lower part of the Hudson River is the perfect place to float without the intense rapids. Companies like Tubby Tubes and Beaver Brook Outfitters allow you to enjoy the Hudson River sans the white water, offering a more relaxing option for river fun.
Whatever your outdoor expectation is, the Adirondacks have something for everyone. Get outside and enjoy the fresh air that this State Park has to offer.
